Fast forward to today, and the once far-off future has arrived, with AI becoming an integral part of our everyday lives. As we stand on the brink of this new era, where AI touches everything from healthcare to finance, one can’t help but hope that our journey with AI doesn’t end like it does in the movies where the machines inevitably turn against their creators.

As we begin to grasp the profound implications of AI, we’re also faced with the critical task of regulating this powerful technology, a task the European Union has taken on with the passage of the AI Act. On 13 March 2023, the European Parliament passed the AI Act, marking a historic moment as the first comprehensive legislation designed to regulate artificial intelligence. The act came into force on 1 August, 2024, and aims to establish a framework for the safe and ethical deployment of AI across the EU.

Recognizing that not all AI is created equal, the Act categorizes AI systems into four risk levels unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal each with corresponding regulatory requirements. For instance, AI systems that pose an “unacceptable risk” to human rights, like government-operated social scoring systems, are outright banned. Meanwhile, high-risk AI systems, which include applications in critical infrastructure or law enforcement, must adhere to strict standards of transparency, accountability, and human oversight. This focus on human oversight is crucial. The Act mandates that developers of high-risk AI systems implement measures that allow human intervention, ensuring that these technologies don’t operate entirely on their own in critical situations.
