In Memory of Dr. Behrooz Akhlaghi

In Memory of Dr. Behrooz Akhlaghi: A Luminary in International Trade Law

With the recent passing of Dr. Behrooz Akhlaghi, the legal community and academia have lost one of their brightest stars. A professor at the University of Tehran and a pioneer in the field of international trade law, Dr. Akhlaghi’s contributions extend far beyond the classroom. He was not just a scholar; he was a mentor, a family man, and a friend who left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Born in 1937 in Bandar-e Torkaman, Dr. Akhlaghi’s early years were marked by resilience and determination. He was the eldest of seven children, and from a young age, he assumed a leadership role within his family. His father’s work in the newly established railway system brought the family to the north of Iran, where Behrooz completed his early education. However, his life’s journey would take him far beyond these humble beginnings.
Dr. Akhlaghi’s academic journey was illustrious. He began his studies in law and French literature at the University of Tehran but was forced to choose between the two disciplines due to university regulations. He chose law, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. He earned his doctorate in private law, and soon after, he was awarded a scholarship to continue his studies in France. There, at the University of Aix-Marseille, he earned a prestigious Doctorat d’État in private law—a remarkable achievement for a foreign scholar.
Returning to Iran, Dr. Akhlaghi joined the faculty of Law at the University of Tehran, where he dedicated 34 years to teaching and mentoring students. His expertise in aviation law and international trade law made him a cornerstone of the law faculty, and despite his repeated requests for retirement, the university refused to let him go, citing the need for his continued presence in the doctoral and postgraduate programs. But Dr. Akhlaghi was more than just an academic. He was a warm, charismatic man, known for his sense of humor and ability to put others at ease. His students and colleagues remember him not just as a teacher, but as a friend and mentor who was always approachable and willing to share his vast knowledge. His charisma extended beyond the university walls as clients in his legal practice felt a genuine connection with him, often seeing him as more than just their attorney, but as a trusted advisor and confidant.
He believed deeply in the power of collaboration, consistently encouraging his students and colleagues to work together. In a legal culture where many professionals preferred to work independently, Dr. Akhlaghi was a strong advocate for teamwork. He promoted the idea of law offices operating with cohesive teams, believing that collective effort produced the best results.
Dr. Akhlaghi’s commitment to his country was unwavering. Although many of his siblings settled abroad, he remained in Iran, driven by a deep love for his homeland. He could have easily pursued a lucrative career overseas, but he chose to stay, to teach, and to contribute to the development of Iran’s legal system. He often spoke of his experiences defending Iran’s interests in international legal disputes, including the significant case involving the frozen assets of the former regime in the United States. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Akhlaghi was a devoted husband and father. He played a pivotal role in his family’s life, taking on responsibilities from a young age and continuing to provide guidance and support throughout his life. His warmth and love for his family were evident to all who knew him. In remembering Dr. Akhlaghi, we honor not just his professional achievements, but also the man he was—kind, compassionate, and dedicated to the people around him. His legacy will live on in the countless students he taught, the legal community he shaped, and the family he cherished. He may no longer be with us, but his influence and memory will remain forever.
