The Registration Procedure of Geographical Indications (GI) in Iran

The applicant/s for registration of GI shall refer to the website of State Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties, Intellectual Property Center and she/he also needs to prepare the related documents (e.g. declaration of GI) for rendering to the aforesaid Center.

The rendered declaration should have the subsequent remarks:

In case the applicant is the company, institution, organization, etc., the following shall be noted in the related declaration:

Legal entity’s name (the name of company, institution, organization, etc.), Legal entity’s type (Limited Liability Company, Private Joint Stock Company, Public Joint Stock Company, etc.), The place of registration, The registration number, Head office location and Postal address.

Furthermore, the goods’ features shall contain the followings in the declaration, the good’s name and the requested GI (e.g. the carpet – Isfahan’s carpet), the good’s description which related to its texture consisting from raw materials and weave’s type, design & motifs, coloring and if a particular method is used for attaining the product, the clarifications is also required, for instance, dyeing through special manner.

Taking note to the above, the relations between the production’s place and the manufactured goods shall be specified, for example, applying the certain colored plants of the region or soil region and in case some structures for observing, quality control in manufacturing is required, the declaration is needed and also the specified manner for attaching the good’s label (such as attaching, carving, weaving, etc.) needs to be cited.

Apart from the above, the approval of the authorities, the related unions or organizations is required like the approval of the Iran National Carpet Center and in case the country of origin is not Iran, the GI license should be provided with its formal translation to the Intellectual Property Center.
